As the name suggests, a cutaway is an editing technique that ‘cuts away’ from the primary filmic theme or the A-Roll. That’s why they’re often referred to as the ‘B-Roll.
Testimonials and direct to camera presentations are two of our mainstays and whilst a ‘talking head’ can hold your interest for some time, you can add another layer by cutting away to vision that enacts the speaker’s dialogue. If a speaker references how well a team works, cutaway to that team in action.
Sounds simple but used well, a cutaway can add a filmic dimension to your video to help maximise impact and improve storytelling.
